"...without the skill and care of the staff in Special Care our daughter would not be here today."
"We will always be eternally grateful to the Unit and its staff."
For some babies, those who are premature and those who are born with problems, Special and Intensive Care Nurseries are their best chance of survival. The problems which sick newborn babies can pose are immense ranging from cardiac and breathing problems to difficulties in maintaining their own body temperature and feeding, as well as the risks of brain damage and other conditions.
In conjunction with the University of Oxford Department of Paediatrics and other organisations, the Nursery is involved in research into growth and development, hormone levels, brain scanning, the analysis of blood gases, cerbral flow, the development of the nervous system and other vital projects – the purpose of all of which is to preserve life and prevent disability.
